Explore Morocco on a day trip from Fes or an excursion from Marrakech with Expedition Traveling.

On this day trip from Fes, after breakfast in your Riad/Hotel around 8 AM we will start your day trip toward Chefchaouen, as it is often called by Moroccans, is a popular tourist destination because of its proximity to Tangier and the Spanish enclave of Ceuta. The name refers to the shape of the mountain tops above the town, that look like the two horns (chaoua) of a goat. “Chef Chaouen” derives from the Berber word for horns, Ichawen. There are approximately two hundred hotels catering to the summer influx of European tourists. One distinction that Chefchaouen is famous for is its blue houses and buildings.

Chefchaouen is a popular shopping destination as well, as it offers many native handicrafts that are not available elsewhere in Morocco, such as wool garments and woven blankets. The goat cheese native to the area is also popular with tourists.

The countryside around it has a reputation for being a prolific source of kief. The Chefchaouen region is one of the main producers of cannabis in Morocco.

The growing tourist industry is geared especially towards Spanish tourists, who are especially numerous during great Catholic feasts like Semana Santa and Christmas. Chefchaouen was visited by Joe Orton and Kenneth Halliwell in 1967. They adored it finding it “very ‘Golden Bough-ish’ Orton mentions their trip in the Orton Diaries.

On this day trip, we drive to explore the tiny villages around Erg Chebbi dunes such as Hassi Labied, Merzouga, and Khamlia. Near Merzouga, you will have the chance to see Dayet Srji lake that forms in springtime which attracts flocks of pink flamingos and wildlife. On our way to Khamila we expect to meet locals showing their desert foxes.

Khamlia is known as the village of black people who were slaves coming from Sudan you will be hospitably welcomed with a cup of tea (Whiskey Berber) while enjoying their spiritual Gnawa music. Our next stop is on the panoramic view of golden dunes near the Algerian border. We will visit a Nomad family, who are living under Berber tent and who are taking care of herd of cattle, goats, and camels. You will have the chance to visit the sites of black volcanic rocks.

This excursion from Marrakech will take us to Essaouira. Essaouira is a port city and resort on Morocco’s Atlantic coast. Its medina (old town) is protected by 18th-century seafront ramparts called the Skala de la Kasbah, which was designed by European engineers. Old brass cannons line the walls, and there are ocean views. Strong “Alizée” trade winds make the city’s crescent beach popular for surfing, windsurfing, and kitesurfing.

The Medina of Essaouira (formerly “Mogador”) is a UNESCO World Heritage-listed city, an example of a late 18th-century fortified town, as transferred to North Africa by European colonists. Major problems currently are deterioration of the extensive ramparts around the Medina; and widespread violation of laws against vehicles (primarily mopeds) within the Medina.

This day trip from Fes will take us to an archeological site. Volubilis is a partly excavated Roman city in Morocco near Meknes between Fes and Rabat. Built-in a fertile agricultural area, it returns to the 3rd century BC onwards as a Phoenician settlement. After exploring the area we will end our day trip from Fes
